RIDERS TO THE SEA SINGING WORKSHOP

CREATIVE SINGING WORKSHOP | 10 SEPT 2023

RIDERS TO THE SEA / THE LAST BIT OF THE MOON with MICHAEL BETTERIDGE

Come join the Sunday Boys, OperaUpClose and ArtfulScribe as we workshop a new choral work written by Michael Betteridge for male and low voice choir, accordion, oboe and clarinet. This new choral work has been created as a musical response and prologue to Vaughan William’s Riders to the Sea…

“Less an opera than a spoken drama raised in emotional power and expressiveness”.

Developed through a series of workshops led by composer and vocal leader Michael Betteridge and Southampton- based writer development agency ArtfulScribe, this is a piece about community, caring as a contemporary reflection on what we mean by family and home in today’s society.

“They’re all gone now, and there isn’t anything more the sea can do to me…”

The final version of this new piece, currently titled The Last Bit of the Moon, will be recorded and filmed with groups from around the UK in Spring 2024. As well as being presented on digital platforms this film will feature as the prologue in a full touring production of Riders to the Sea opening at MAST, Southampton in Summer 2024.

Date, time and location:

Sunday 10 September, 1 – 4pm

@ Hallé at St Michaels, 36-38 George Leigh St, Ancoats, Manchester M4 5DG

Registration:

These workshops are open to everyone and we are particularly interested in encouraging men and anyone that sings with a low voice (ie in the tenor or bass range). If you are unsure what your vocal range is and whether you are a ‘low voiced’ singer, you can watch this short video to work out which part you might sing in a low voice (ie tenor and bass) choir, learn more in our video ‘What Vocal Part Am I?’… Most low voiced people are men, but many women and non-binary people can sing tenor and baritone, and even bass, range.

We aim to ensure that there are no barriers to accessing our work on and off stage. If you have any access requirements that you would like to discuss, please contact, Jane Ryan, jane@operaupclose.com.
